Women's health spans the physiology, conditions, and health trajectories specific to or disproportionately affecting women. It includes the menstrual cycle and its disorders, fertility and pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause, bone density, breast and gynecologic health, autoimmune disease — which affects women far more often than men — cardiovascular risk that presents differently and is frequently underrecognized, thyroid disorders, iron status, and mental health across hormonal transitions. Common conditions include polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, dysmenorrhea, osteoporosis, and vasomotor symptoms of menopause. Historical underrepresentation of women in clinical research has left measurable gaps in evidence, which continues to shape diagnosis and treatment.
The organizing biology is the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis: pulsatile GnRH drives FSH and LH, governing follicular development, ovulation, and cyclical estradiol and progesterone production. Estrogen acting through ER-alpha and ER-beta influences bone remodeling via the RANKL-osteoprotegerin balance, vascular endothelial function and nitric oxide availability, lipid handling, immune tone, and neurotransmitter systems — which is why its decline at menopause has effects well beyond reproduction. Insulin resistance and androgen excess underlie polycystic ovary syndrome; estrogen-dependent inflammation, prostaglandins, and aberrant tissue growth characterize endometriosis.
